AFTER 650 DONATIONS AT THE BLOOD BANK ONE WOULD THINK THAT GRAHAM DEMPSEY HAS PERFECTED MAKING A GOOD DROP OF RED, BLOOD THAT IS. PICTURED WITH HIM IS A LITTLE RECIPIENT, CHARLIE HAGGETT, 7.

ON Sunday a special recognition event for milestone blood donors was held to celebrate National Blood Donor week.

Jennifer Williams the CEO of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service was in attendance at the Eureka Room Ballarat Hotel and Convention Centre to present awards to over 100 Milestone donors.

Top of the list was Melton man Graham Dempsey who has given 676 donations. My Dempsey said he has donated so many times because he is quite healthy.

And his secret? “Plenty of whiskey, a beer and a red wine does wonders for you every day,” he laughed. “I come up every second week from Melton to Ballarat because the girls are so lovely here. “I have been doing it for 10 years now I can’t do it when I’m dead and within 12 months I might have the 700.”

Donating blood only takes one hour and the blood service is always looking for new donors. People generally respond when there has been a disaster but a constant supply is needed.

Currently only one in 30 people donate blood yet one in three will need blood in their lifetime. Every blood donation helps to save three lives. National Blood Donor Week also includes donors for plasma, platelets, Anti-D and bonemarrow. Your blood type helps determine which form of donation is best use for your blood.
