THIS year’s annual Ballarat Choral Festival was held on Sunday 29th May, at St Patrick’s Cathedral, and was organised by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Fifteen choirs participated and the cathedral was packed.
Donations were raised for One Humanity, to help outfit a mobile shower bus for Ballarat’s homeless and amounted to $953.05. This year’s performers included choirs from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Baha’i and Anglican communities, the Country Women’s Association, Phoenix P-12 Community College, St Columba’s Primary School, Pyrenees Chorale, Federation University and many more.
Organiser Margaret Lenan Ellis said the smallest choir was comprised of four singers, while the largest had 35. The audience appreciated the variety of songs, which were not all religious based. “Just because we’re performing in a cathedral, it does not put the onus on any choir that they’ve got to sing religious music,” Ms Lenan Ellis said. “When people ask what kind of music I’m looking for, I say it’s open.” Photography by Nicole Cox.
