City of Ballarat wins award

The City of Ballarat, together with City of Melbourne and Greater City of Geelong, was presented with a 2015 Municipal Association Victoria Technology Exemplar Award for Excellence (19/08). The award was in recognition of our collaboration in working with the Code for Australia fellows to expand the number of open data sets available for GovHack 2015. Code for Australia is a network of designers, developers, and civic technologists working to build a government that works for the people. GovHack is a community event run by volunteers that draws people together to innovate with Open Government Data to address the challenges that governments face. It provides an opportunity to test what innovation would arise from providing access to see what the community can do with the data.

Green Army project complete

In April, 2015 the City of Ballarat was successful in the second round of applications for the Green Army 2014–2016 ‘Waterways Beautification and Restoration Works’ program. After 20 weeks, the program will reach completion this week. Thank you to the nine participants and one supervisor from Conservation Volunteers Australia who were involved in beautification and restoration works at: North Gardens Wetlands; Nerrina Wetlands; Specimen Vale Creek; Canadian Creek; Yarrowee River; Lake Burrumbeet; Lake Esmond; and Buninyong Gong Reserve. The project has enhanced the biodiversity of the reserves, improved access for passive recreation, aesthetics and improved wildlife habitat.
