CRESWICK Theatre Company latest production is a Midsummer’s Dream The Musical, a new musical comedy by Gary Gallagher, inspired by William Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Gary, who lives in Ballarat, is also directing the show and filling special cameo roles.
He has kept the Ancient Athenian setting and most of the characters and incidents of the play, yet he has written a libretto, music and lyrics that help reveal issues that are of real contemporary importance for
21st. Century audiences. “This new musical revolves around the affairs of Lord Oberon and Titania, Queen of the Fairies. During our musical journey we meet star-crossed lovers Lysander and Hermia, a group of amateur actors, ethereal fairies and other creatures who inhabit the forest in which most of the play is set,” said Jacinta Antonelli.
“Gary’s tunes will have you singing along, performed by a vibrant band and a cast of new and current members resulting in the promise of great night’s entertainment.”
The musical even manages to satirise the politics of royal courts, tyrannies, families and theatre companies alike, and does so while never appearing to being anything other than an innocent musical comedy of the sweetest kind. “This is a family entertainment that actually has something new to say to everyone about the nature of love. Whether you have ever seen Shakepeare’s play, or not… You must not miss this musical,” Ms Antonelli added.
