NORTH Ballarat City footballers could not make it a hat trick in Saturday’s grand final, after lagging behind for most of the match. It was a disappointing loss, the locals going down to Darley by 61 points 84-23. At quarter time scores were level on 14 but it slowly started to slide backwards from there.
Jake Edwards and Dane Grenfell started to turn the game on it’s head for Darley as they made their presence felt around the goals with no answers coming from Ballarat. Injuries to three North players, Ryan Luke in the first 10 minutes with a shoulder injury, Sam Hooper (who returned later) and Shaun Lyle with an injury to his medial ligament, made it tough for the rest of the side. North’s efforts could not be faulted; they just couldn’t match Darley on the day. North City coach Rob Waters said they couldn’t get any clean footy in the early stages of the game and the gap just grew and grew.
“When they dominated their confidence went up and we went the other way,” he said. North Ballarat City were getting the stick all over the ground as Darley played with a lot of confidence and one might say arrogance the more they went forward. The last quarter saw Ballarat supporters leaving early and the ones that stayed were in dismay, watching their side get buried deeper by a sleek Darley squad.
“We were in a bit of strife and we changed a few things and it didn’t come off and then some injuries restricted us and we couldn’t gain any legs,” said Waters.
There is talk that some of the veterans at the club are looking to retire but it is early days yet to make any such decisions.
