Raffles, donations and collections tins are also part of the month long fund raiser. “Two of my team members and me had a tour of the new facility and saw the amazing things they are doing and we were blown away because they are dealing with all cancers. Not just concentrating on one type, and I feel by donating to the institute we are helping everyone.”
Professor Kannourakis said the institute is currently researching personalized cancer treatment that does not involve chemotherapy. “Our focus is on immune cells and I predict that in 5-10 years we will not be using chemo,” he said. “We have treated melanoma and some lung cancer without chemo but with immune therapy, with good success.” Professor Kannourakis added he was happy to see so many women taking care of their bodies, through exercise and healthy eating, saying, “You are indirectly helping me by keeping your immune system healthy.” The Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute is non government funded and relies and donations and fundraisers.
