THE Avoca Shire Turf Club has once again upped the ante in preparation for its 160th anniversary celebrations at one of the great country race meetings on the calendar, the Blue Pyrenees Estate Avoca Cup.
More than six thousand people are expected to join the celebrations on course this Saturday.
The Avoca Shire Turf Club is the second-oldest club in Victoria and boasts the oldest operating racetrack.
Down for the count at one stage throughout history, it is now one of Victoria’s most progressive country racing clubs.
A recent winner of the Country Racing Victoria Event of the Year Award, the Avoca Cup has been running longer than the Melbourne Cup and continues to grow in popularity every year.
Recent initiatives including on-course camping, an event app and an interactive fashions precinct have proven a hit with punters.
This year’s new addition of a glamping will no doubt continue to grow in popularity too.
Avoca Shire Turf Club Event and Marketing Manager Vanessa Briody said the club was gearing up for a memorable day.
“A lot of work has been put into this cup day to celebrate 160 years of racing,” she said.
“This year we have roving performers including Dazzling Dan, The Dreaming Space, Public Mischief and Jacques the French Waiter, to create a real festival atmosphere.
“A timeline of the club’s history will be on display and our Instagram photo wall located next to the Elysium Day Spa Retouch Marquee is going to look amazing.
“Patrons can also enjoy the Blue Pyrenees wine tent, free kids’ activities, live bands Untapped Trio and Zevon & Co, plus all of the Caulfield Cup action live on the big screen.” On top of all the attractions, there will be seven races at Avoca to complement the action from Caulfield.
Avoca’s Fashions on the Field will be bigger again this year and will see a traditional catwalk competition with a record prize pool of $12,000 across all categories, including the all-new Hedon Farm “Out There” Outfit.
The club have over 120 campsites booked for the weekend and guests will be treated to stories from guest speaker and trainer Austy Coffey at the Cup Eve Calcutta, along with former club president Jon Howell and former vice-president Norm Harrison, who will each reflect on their time at the club.
Embracing the advantages of technology, the club offers a free Avoca Races phone app, which also features many other benefits allowing punters to get the most out of their race day.
With all of this to offer, more and more racegoers continue to choose the Avoca Cup for their Spring Racing Carnival getaway.
Gates open 10:30am on Saturday the 21st of October.
