ON Saturday The House of Welcome held as fundraising event to assist local asylum seekers and refugees. The afternoon was one of song and fun, competitions, games and stalls, with an afternoon tea capping it off. The House of Welcome assists asylum seekers and refugees with advocacy, support and accommodation; this is done locally and also further afield. The group visits detention centres weekly and also provides material aid eg. clothing.
“Today is a fun day to raise funds for legal expenses, medical expenses, education – all those things we do,” organisers said. A great number of people turned up to the ‘Gospel in the Garden’ event and tapped their feet to the music of Sweet Mona’s Gospel Choir, local U3A ukulele players, drummers and West Papuan musicians. The House of Welcome works in partnership with a range of community services and is always on the lookout for volunteers. They also welcome donations from the public to help assist asylum seekers and refugees.
