IN 2016 Steve Armati, was one of the “Rock of Ages” cast members, and following the that show he proposed that Lyric produce Andrew Lloyd Webber’s awardwinning musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Steve’s vision was innovative and exciting. Rather than produce the standard version of the musical, he wanted to recreate the Arena Spectacular version, which starred Tim Minchen as Judas.

Lyric leapt at the opportunity to bring this vibrant new-look rendition of an old standard to life in Ballarat. With Steve bringing a fresh look to the show as Director, his wife Kat Armati as Choreographer, Geoff Martin as Musical Director and Susan Jackson as Choral Director we held auditions, chose a sensational cast and began rehearsals in September 2017.The lead role of Jesus will be portrayed by our multi-talented Laurence Heenan. Because the show is so physical and demanding Steve wisely decided to alternate the role of Judas between Aidan Brady and Dylan Shalless.

Another innovation is to rotate two understudies into the main cast during the March 10th matinee.

Ellie Carroll will stand in for Shelly Szova as Mary, while Matt Henderson will stand in for Dan West as Pontius Pilate. This brilliant move will broaden the experience of our cast and ensure that they will be at their peak for each performance.

For over fifty years Ballarat Lyric Theatre has considered our cast and crew to be part of a larger family that toils selflessly behind the scenes and out of the limelight. Without these scores of dedicated people no show would reach the stage. During the past six months the cast and orchestra rehearsed several times each week, singing and playing millions of notes, while the set building team, costume team, lighting team, sound team, IT specialists and backstage crew got busy with the nuts and bolts of the production.

They have collectively spent thousands of hours crafting raw materials into sets, costumes and props which, when blended with the exquisite design of Outlook’s sound and MysticEntertainmentz’s lighting, will create a spectacle deserving of this wonderful show.
