THE Guiding Light Lodge Ballarat has made a significant contribution to the educational needs of legatee children in the Ballarat district. Last Friday the Lodge presented Ballarat Legacy with a donation of $1000, per year, for the next ten years. The donation is in memory of Robin Watson who was a Lodge member and a Vietnam veteran. Lodge Member Peter Bond explained that one of their members had kindly donated a sizeable amount of money, which has been invest ed.

“Every year, for the next ten years, we will be drawing down on it and the Freemasons Society of Victoria will give us dollar for dollar,” Mr Bond said.

“The Freemasons Foundation gives something like $400,000 a year for the educational bursaries. This money will go towards Legatee children to help them with their education.” Howard Gibbon, Legacy president, said the donation meant that they could continue to support the families of veterans who have come back from Iraq and Afghanistan and are living in the Ballarat region.

“We have a number of families with children ranging from pre-primary school to year 12,” he said.

“We have a growing commitment so this will go to help towards educational costs.”

Robin Watson’s widow, Jan, said her husband would be enormously proud to have this donation in his name, “He was a proud Freemason but he was also a proud Veteran. He was a great believer in education, as well,” she said.
