SATURDAY’S match at Morshead Park between the Matildas and New Zealand did not disappoint fans with a 2-0 goal win to Australia. Despite the win Matildas Coach Alen Stajcic said there were times during play when the Matildas were far from fluent.

“I think our good spells and our good passages of play were really good, it was that fluency and cohesion that we had over in Japan but I just thought

there were too many spells where we were sloppy on the ball and gave the ball away too cheaply,” he said. “I think the differences between our good play and our bad play were too great and probably too many passages of play where we lost that fluency, and that comes from not being together for 3 months.”

But overall Stajcic said he was happy with the result. Ranked 5 in the world, Australia outclassed 16th ranked New Zealand in front of a large crowd. “I thought the first 15 minutes were excellent and then we dropped away for the next 15 after that and then maybe just picked it up a bit before half time but it’s just that rhythm of play when you haven’t been around each other for a little bit of time that held us back a little,” Stajcic added. “Caitlin Foord, an unbe lievable player, and for me potentially one of the best players in the world , and if she can add goal scoring to her list of attributes there is no reason why she can’t be one of the best players in the world.

“Chloe Logarzo is a fantastic player in our squad and a great addition to our squad, in recent times the work load she has, she is almost like two players she covers so much territory and puts so much pressure on the opposition and she is another one that if she can add goal scoring to her list of attributes, she will be some player. “Young Ellie Carpenter played her third game and Its her first game in the six role, which in our team is the most important role in the team, and Ellie is probably one of the best athletes, the best tacklers to come through the Matildas team in the last 10 years. If she can add a bit of technique and awareness and just a better range of passing I think she will be a good number 6 for us one day.”
