Seating room only but public can buy old ones

Checking out the new comfort in Her Majesty’s is Cr Samantha McIntosh and Cr Des Hudson Mayor of Ballarat

A unique opportunity to “take a seat” will be launched at Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat today. Individuals, businesses and groups are invited to purchase the existing Theatre seats, made available due to the significant seat redevelopment taking place this summer. The Expression of Interest process opened today, with a simple one-page form and donation the path to owning a piece of Ballarat history.

To encourage all bidders, there is no minimum price for seats, with the community invited to pay their chosen value. All funds raised will be invested back into the future restoration and preservation of Her Majesty’s Theatre. Ballarat City Council allocated $1.148 million in the City of Ballarat 2015/16 Budget to a significant redevelopment including new seating and new speciallydesigned carpet at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Mayor Cr Des Hudson said it’s a double win for the community: the new redevelopment and upgrade delivering a contemporary theatre experience and the existing seat sale giving local people an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “Her Majesty’s Theatre is a Ballarat icon which holds a special place in the heart of our community. For the first time this year, Council ran the Budget Priority Projects Survey inviting locals to tell us their top community projects, and we were pleased to see the redevelopment was a very popular choice,” he said. “The seat sale is a great way for the community to support Her Majesty’s and the continued restoration and preservation of this beautiful heritage location.” Chair of the Her Majesty’s Theatre Board Cr Samantha McIntosh encouraged theatre buffs and those passionate about heritage and local history to apply for the seats.

“With 940 seats on offer, this is a rare opportunity for people to take home a piece of local history from one of Australia’s most significant theatres,” she said.

“We expect the seats will be popular with Her Majesty’s patrons and theatre goers, as well as people who love heritage, vintage items and unique design. The seats have seen many great years at the Theatre and we are excited to see, with a bit of love and imagination, where they end up.” The Expression of Interest: Her Majesty’s Theatre Seating is online at the City of Ballarat website: www.ballarat.vic.gov.au and Her Majesty’s Theatre website: www.hermaj.com.
