IT’S time to put on your cycling best, dust off your jersey, shift gears and ride into Ballarat as the Gold Museum celebrates a special community day, the Festival of Spokes. From 10am – 3pm, families can visit the Gold Museum for free to learn about the history of bikes and cycling, learn about bike safety, and see some bikes from an early velocipede to the 20th century racing bicycle. Wheelie experts from The Squeaky Wheel will be on hand teaching people how to ride, providing safety tips, and they will also help you to decorate your bike for a spectacular parade. Bring along your bike, scooter or pram and create a masterpiece in design! The YMCA will run bike maintenance workshops, the Ballarat Historical Society will display their extensive collection of bikes, and Club Mud will show off their collection of mountain bikes. Catch cyclist Damien Kierl in a heart-stopping race as he tries his luck on a penny-farthing against a modern cyclist and a hobby horse rider, and see cycling fashion come alive in true gentleman style with Fashions in Time. This family events offers kids, young and old alike, the chance to discover the fun, fitness and passion of bikes and cycling, ever since this two wheeled vehicle captured our hearts and become a fixture on Ballarat’s roads and tracks. October 31st also sees two new exhibitions come to the Gold Museum. On Your Bike!
