Start of the Ballarat Yacht Club Season

By Quinton Wilkinson THE sun shone for the first day of competitive sailing for the Ballarat Yacht club’s 2017/18 season with a wind gusting to 15 to 20 knots from the North and then shifting during the racing to a north Easterly.

Two short courses of three laps each were run over the afternoon and three classes raced Jubilee’s, Laser and Miscellaneous class.

The racing was keen with many sailors blowing the cobwebs out of the boats and themselves.

Good competition was had with the 6 jubilees with two new boats on the water COLOURMEGONE from Sydney skippered by John Brewer and CORELLA skippered by John McKeen.

The Lasers are always very competitive with the top four boats within a minute of each other: skippers Neville Bilney, Jason Hegart, Rohan Allan and Peter Coburn fought a very tight race.

In the Miscellaneous class we had one retirement of a Paper Tiger but the juniors racing in Pacer’s, skippered by Jonah Maloney Wise and Sara Porter, did well and finished the whole race. Well done.
