THE official opening of the Delacombe Community Garden took place last Friday at Delacombe Community Hub. After the planting of a flowering gum in the new sensory garden by the mayor, choirs from Lumen Christi and Delacombe primary schools braved the chill and sang a few songs, followed by entertainment from the Phoenix Community College.
There was also a WinterFest Market with stallholder goods including homemade candles, honey, hair accessories, second hand clothing and toys. A craft table and kids activities was popular with the youngsters and there was nothing better than a hot sausage sizzle and coffee. The official launch came after a number of works at the centre including the installation of a playground, wetlands and toilets.
Plans are in the making to plant an orchard, which would complement the existing vegetable garden. Friday;s launch was part of a week long celebration for YMCA Ballarat, which is137 years old this year and they’re celebrating with more than 300 other YMCA’s across Australia. June 6 marks the day of the official founding of the YMCA in England by founder, George Williams, in 1844 and this is the second year ever in Australian that the international birthday was celebrated nationally.
