THE Unveiling of portraits of Female Mayors of Ballarat to be displayed at Ballarat Town Hall was one of two special events held last Thursday to mark International Women’s Day.
Mayor Samantha McIntosh unveiled the portraits of the five women who have served as Mayor of the City of Ballarat and its predecessor municipality, the City of Ballaarat.
The portraits of Jessie Scott, Wanda Chapman, Vashti Lloyd, Judy Verlin and Samantha McIntosh will be hung in the Trench Room at the Town Hall.
“We know this is a special day,” said Cr McIntosh prior to the unveiling.
“To past Mayors’ who are present, and I know there are many more past Mayors that we will follow on and recognise as well, but we thought we would start with four very important past mayors and to make sure that there is a last memory of their contributions to the City of Ballarat, in our Town Hall.” Cr McIntosh added that there are many great people around Ballarat, male and female, and many great women around Ballarat that haven’t been recognised in the same manner.
“This is a day that reminds us how far we have come over the past years, decades and the past century,” she said.
Judy Verlin spoke on behalf of the past mayors who were at the unveiling.
“What an opportunity and such a privilege to serve the City over a period of time,” Ms Verlin said.
“To now have some sort of reminder of those times in our lives, and I’m sure I speak on behalf of all of us, they were such wonderful days and exciting times.” She thanked Cr McIntosh for this imitative and for promoting women in leadership in her role as the Mayor of the City of Ballarat.
