APRIL 2nd was World Autism Awareness Day and Guf Ballarat Internet and Games Café had a who’s who crowded into their premises.
World Autism Awareness Day was created by the United Nations in 2007 and it has become an annual event. This year the theme was ‘Light it up Blue’ and many organisations across the globe supported the campaign including The CBS Broadcast Center in New York City; China’s Oriental Pearl Tower; London’s Trafalgar Square; Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign; Niagara Falls; Pope Francis’ Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral; Egypt’s Great Pyramid; and the International Space Station, just to name a few.

Organiser of the awareness day in Ballarat Robert Warr said a number of ‘visitors’ had made appearances at Guf Ballarat. “We have some Mandalorian Mercs, they’re from the Sandhill Clan, we have our balloon artist, Jedi knights from the rebel alliance, spider man, pikachu, we have face painting, teaching everyone about gaming so we are doing Mario Cart and Super Smash Brothers , and a Minecraft Challenge with Dr Who and Tardis,” he said. “Importantly we are raising funds for autism awareness so for every dollar spent in the store we will donate a dollar – there are six locations (Guf) across Australia and all are involved at the same time.”
